PARTO EN CASA

“A woman in birth is at once her most powerful, and most vulnerable.
But any woman who has given birth unhindered understands that we are stronger than we know”

Marcie Macari

Our birthing philosophy is that it is designed to be an extraordinary but natural process in our bodies. As midwives, we are here to support women and their families in a way that allows and encourages them to achieve their desires and goals they hope for during the birth, respecting and promoting their autonomy and aiding them in their decision-making process to have a positive and safe experience.

HOMEBIRTH

Birthing a baby in the intimacy of your own home, following your own rhythm, supporting the different stages of labour through mobilisation or even with the aid of a birth pool and in the company of your chosen support, does considerably reduce any risk of complications and transfer to the hospital, and what is very important, a huge increase in your birth satisfaction.

When birthing at home, you can benefit from the comfort of your own space, letting your deep inner-mammal be, without being judged. Your needs during labour and birth will be heard and covered by your trusted midwives and birth partners and when birth does happen, you will welcome your baby into your arms in the reassurance of your own space.

At home, your birth is yours.

CONTINUITY OF CARE MODEL

At home, we will be there JUST for you. We will have the consistent antenatal visits together throughout your pregnancy, allowing time and space for us to develop a trusting relationship, for conversations to deepen rather than be repeated, and for you to feel safe to raise any concerns or worries you may have.

Continuity can create more opportunities to discuss options and to explain their benefits and risks, supporting you to make informed decisions that feel right for you.

The evidence confirms that when there is continuity of care, the possibility of starting labour spontaneously increases and the risk of premature birth and/or pregnancy loss decreases.

Safeguarding concerns and mental health issues can also be more easily recognized when continuity exists, and the appropriate support can be put in place to help and reduce any negative impact on you, your family, and the development of your child. Positive intervention during this period can make a huge difference to the long term outcomes for your child and for your family’s well-being.

CARE BASED IN LAST EVIDENCE

Midwives are trained healthcare professionals who specialise in normal pregnancy and birth. Our key role is to look after pregnant women and their babies throughout her antenatal care, during labour and birth; and for up to 28 days after the baby has been born.

Our scope of practice supporting births is to monitor mother and baby’s well being, detecting any deviation from normal, while advocating for women’s birth preferences.

Common invasive hospital interventions like synthetic oxytocin, artificial rupture of amniotic sac or epidural, are NOT performed at home, so that’s why you will not have the associated risks.

Current studies confirm home births are a safe and healthy option (Cochrane Evidence):

– Increased birth satisfaction

– Decreased risk to need an episiotomy

– Decrease unnecessary interventions

– Less physical and emotional trauma for mum and baby

– Higher Apgar score (test used to assess babys adaptation to extrauterine environment)

– Less need for analgesia as less suffering

– Better and faster recovering from mum and baby

– Better start and outcome of breastfeeding

In a planned home birth, we bring the adequate material and medication that may be needed in case of an emergency, and we support women to  make informed decisions in case there is a need to transfer to the hospital, considering and planning this unlikely option in advance.

In the few cases that you need to be transferred to hospital, it is unlikely to be for anything urgent. It’s more likely because you’ve asked for an epidural or things are progressing slowly.

EARLY LABOUR SUPPORT
AND ASSESSMENT AT HOME

This early labour support service is practically the same as the one described for home birth, with the only difference being that when the time comes, the plan is to drive to the hospital.

If this is something you wish, you can benefit from the complete package, continued pregnancy midwifery care, on call from 37 weeks with our support at home until labour is established, which is a good way to avoid discomfort and unnecessary interventions when you arrive at the hospital.

If at any time, you change your mind and decide to give birth at home, this could be facilitated as we would have the same equipment at home for early labour as we would for complete home labour and birth.

When you are discharged from hospital, we will visit you at home for mum and baby postnatal care (3 postnatal visits).
